Battleground St Thecla in Ma'loula

Today is the feast of St Thecla, the first woman martyr
called "apostle and protomartyr among women".
Just a few hundred miles away from some of us,
her holy tomb has become a war-zone
over the past three weeks.
While it is difficult to ascertain exactly who is fighting who,
who is conspiring against who,
and who wants what,
what is clear is that one of the most
ancient Christian holy places is being menaced.
It seems now to have been taken back from the rebel forces
and peace seems to have returned.
The sacred place was guarded during these past weeks
by a very tenacious group of Orthodox nuns,
 and their Abbess Pelagia,
obviously a "mulier fortis" even in the face of Al-Quaeda!
The nuns refused to leave the monastery.

The following images and film clips, often of not very good quality,
recommend at least to your prayers
our suffering brothers and sisters in Syria,
by giving you a flavour of what has been life for those
living in Ma'loula in the shadow of
 St Thecla's tomb, during September.
Various nationalistic and political opinions or prejudices are expressed
which are not the intention or part of this post,
and simply form part of the background to these events.

Remember them at your Masses today!

Tourists before the tomb of St Thecla in more peaceful days.

The Holy Martyr St Thecla, a young noble maiden of Konya,
heard St Paul's discourse on virginity and became his disciple,
Her mother and fiancĂ© Thamyris, feared St Paul's injunction
that "one must fear only one God and live in chastity"
and their fear ended in an attempt to burn the saint at the stake
from which she was miraculously saved by the onset of a storm.
She travelled with St Paul to Antioch of Pisidia.
There a nobleman named Alexander desired Thecla
and attempted to take her by force.
She fought him off, assaulting him in the process,
and was put on trial for assaulting a nobleman.
She was sentenced to be devoured by wild beasts,
but was again saved by a series of miracles when the lions protected her.
St Thecla's Monastery, Ma'loula.

In Ma'loula, where her relics repose, tradition says that while being pursued by soldiers of her father who wished to capture her because of her Christian faith, the saint came upon a mountain, and after praying, the mountain split open and let her escape through. - the name of the village comes from the Aramaic word meaning 'entrance'. It is known as one of three places where Western Aramaic is still spoken.

The village is also the site of the Greek Catholic Monastery of St Sarkis, one of the oldest surviving monasteries in Syria. It was built on the site of a pagan temple, and has elements which go back to the fifth to sixth century Byzantine period.

Now for an insight into September, 2013.

The BBC reports the general situation during the occupation of Ma'loula.

DOMINUS EST - It is the Lord!

Most Rev. Athanasius Schneider, O.R.C.,
consecrated bishop on 2 June, 2006, is
Auxiliary Bishop of Maria Santissima in Astana,
Kazakhstan.

Relying on accurate history and good theology,
the author of DOMINUS EST makes a plea for a return to distributing
Holy Communion to kneeling communicants on the tongue —
the practice now restored at papal liturgies by Pope Benedict XVI.

The book written by Bishop Schneider
is available in English.

Dominus Est – It Is the Lord!
Preface by Cardinal Ranjith.

Originally published in Italian by the Vatican Press,
this book offers readers insights into the sacrality
which ought to surround the distribution
and reception of Holy Communion

The book comes with the endorsement of the then two highest officials
in the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship
and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

About our brothers.

We hope that it is clear that
the Transalpine Redemptorists
want every Jewish person
to look upon us as their brothers.

We condemn all forms of Antisemitism
including anti-semitic conspiracy theories.

We make our own these words spoken by
Pope Pius XI:

"Mark well that in the Catholic Mass,
Abraham is our Patriarch and forefather.

Antisemitism is incompatible with the lofty thought
which that fact expresses.
It is a movement with which we Christians
can have nothing to do.

No, no, I say to you
it is impossible for a Christian
to take part in Antisemitism.
It is inadmissible.
Through Christ and in Christ
we are the spiritual progeny of Abraham.
Spiritually, we [Christians] are all Semites."
(Pius XI, 6 September 1938.)

With
Pope Benedict XVI
at
Yad Vashem
we say:

The Holocaust,
the Shoah,
was a horrific tragedy of sufferings
that should never be denied, belittled or forgotten.

If you can help, use a safe charity.

"Cor Unum"
is the Holy Father's Charity.

Horn of Africa

Yesterday the Pontifical Council Cor Unum warned that
hundreds of thousands of people in the Horn of Africa
are at risk of dying due to a lack of basic necessities
caused by drought and violence.

This council, which oversees the Church's charity work,
noted Benedict XVI's appeal on Sunday.

"Around 10 million people are suffering, and hundreds of thousands of refugees risk dying because of a lack of basic necessities. Somalia and northern Kenya are the worst struck areas."

The drought is the worst the area has seen for 60 years.
The last official famine was in 1984-85,
when about 1 million people in Ethiopia and Sudan died.

South Somalia is controlled by Islamic fundamentalists
who until last week had banned aid agencies from the area.

The Pope appealing for the Horn of Africa last Sunday.

The Holy Father already sent a €50,000 ($70,000) donation
through Cor Unum
to the apostolic administrator of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
The Apostolic Administrator Bishop Giorgio Bertin
is directly involved in bringing assistance to the people affected.

Procession for Our Lady of Christchurch

Our Lady of Christchurch.

Our Lady of Christchurch.

Today in Christchurch, New Zealand
there will be a special procession in honour
of
Our Lady of Christchurch.

While the earth heaved
and all this was happening,
while all that wasn't,
and most of what was,
cemented down
was smashed to the ground,
Our Lady of Christchurch
turned to face Her children.

Our Lady of Christchurch
stood in the left tower...

... and can be seen in this picture
at the window of the upper level
just below the devastation.

While towers and great domes fell about Her
while the earth cracked beneath Her
and glass smashed before Her,
Our Lady stood,
Stabat.
Stabat Mater.
Stabat Mater dolorosa... lacrimosa...
Our Lady of Christchurch, pray for us.

During the calamitous February 22 earthquakes
that blitzed the city
the statue that had been in the bell tower of the Cathedral
remained serenely standing
and turned 180 degrees to face out through
the bell tower's broken window
as the
Comfortress of the Afflicted.

The coming of calamities.

The tsunami that hit Kesennuma today
is only 125 miles by road from Akita
on the West coast of Honshu
where
Our Lady of Akita
appeared in 1973

to warn of calamities.

The messages emphasize
prayer and penance.

Miracles accompanied these messages.
Sister Sasagawa who received them
was instantly cured of deafness
another person was cured of brain cancer.

After thorough investigation
these Messages were approved by the Church
on 22 April 1984.

Our Lady said to Sister Sasagawa:

"Pray very much the prayers of the Rosary.
I alone am able still to save you from
the calamities which approach."

As seen on national Japanese television.

An unusual nature of the apparitions was that,
unlike other cases,

the entire nation of Japan
was able to view the tears
of the statue of the Virgin Mary

on national television.

The miraculous image wept tears
101 times.

Here follow the main thrust of the messages received by:
Sister Agnes Sasagawa,
Order of the Handmaids of the Eucharist.

Our Lady of Akita.

JULY 6, 1973

Our Lady said:
"Pray very much for the Pope, Bishops, and Priests..."

AUGUST 3, 1973

Our Lady said:
"Many men in this world afflict the Lord.
I desire souls to console Him
to soften the anger of the Heavenly Father.

I wish, with my Son, for souls
who will repair by their suffering and their poverty
for the sinners and ingrates."

"In order that the world might know His anger,
the Heavenly Father is preparing to inflict
a great chastisement on all mankind.

With my Son I have intervened so many times
to appease the wrath of the Father.
I have prevented the coming of calamities
by offering Him the sufferings of the Son on the Cross,
His Precious Blood,
and beloved souls who console Him
forming a cohort of victim souls.

Prayer, penance and courageous sacrifices
can soften the Father's anger."

The Miraculous Tears of Our Lady of Akita.

OCTOBER 13, 1973

Our Lady said:

"As I told you,
if men do not repent and better themselves,
the Father will inflict a terrible punishment
on all humanity.

It will be a punishment greater than the deluge,
such as one will never seen before.

Fire will fall from the sky
and will wipe out a great part of humanity,

the good as well as the bad,
sparing neither priests nor faithful.

The survivors will find themselves so desolate
that they will envy the dead.

The only arms which will remain for you
will be the Rosary

and the Sign left by My Son.
Each day recite the prayers of the Rosary.
With the Rosary, pray for the Pope,
the bishops and priests."

"The work of the devil will infiltrate
even into the Church

in such a way that one will see
cardinals opposing cardinals,

bishops against bishops.

The priests who venerate me
will be scorned and opposed
by their confreres...

churches and altars sacked;
the Church will be full
of those who accept compromises

and the demon will press many priests
and consecrated souls

to leave the service of the Lord.

"The demon will be especially implacable
against souls consecrated to God.
The thought of the loss of so many souls
is the cause of my sadness.

If sins increase in number and gravity,
there will be no longer pardon for them."

"Pray very much the prayers of the Rosary.
I alone am able still to save you
from the calamites which approach.
Those who place their confidence in me will be saved."

Our Lady of Akita,
Sweet Mother of Japan,
Succour
Thy suffering children
and protect us
from further calamities.
